Snow and ice

Gritting and clearing roads and paths

West Sussex County Council is responsible for roads, highways and paths in Crawley and will grit roads where it can during severe weather.

We will assist with local road and path clearing when there is snow.

Service disruption

If waste and recycling collection vehicles are unable to drive down residential roads for several days, we may set up alternative rubbish collection points.

We will concentrate on clearing roads so that collections can start again.

What you can do

If the weather is severe, help the community by clearing snow and ice, checking on a neighbour or taking a friend’s rubbish to collection points.

Only use the salt found in salting bins and Hippo bags to treat roads and pavements in the areas they are situated. Don’t use water or other liquids because this could cause black ice.

Snow volunteers

Help clear snow with volunteer snow coordinators in your neighbourhood. To borrow their equipment, call 01293 438000 or contact your ward councillor.
