Abandoned vehicles
If you think a vehicle has been abandoned in Crawley, you can report it to us. We will investigate and establish whether further action can be taken.
We can investigate abandoned vehicles on land in the open air (including private land) and on roads (including private roads).
A vehicle may be considered abandoned if one or more of the following applies:
- it is untaxed - check if a vehicle is taxed on the GOV.UK website
- it has no MOT - check if a vehicle has an MOT on the GOV.UK website
- it’s stationary for a significant amount of time
- it’s significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy, for example has flat tyres, missing wheels, or broken windows
- it’s burned out
- a number plate is missing
What to do if a vehicle is untaxed or doesn't have an MOT
Untaxed vehicles on the public highway are dealt with by the DVLA. You can report an untaxed vehicle on the GOV.UK website.
Vehicles on the public highway without an MOT are dealt with by the Police. You can report a vehicle without an MOT on the Sussex Police website.

What happens next
If we think a vehicle has been left abandoned, we’ll put an abandoned vehicle notice on it. This notice asks the owner to claim and remove the vehicle within a set time:
- seven days if it’s on a public road
- 15 days if it’s on private or other land
If the vehicle isn’t claimed and removed within that time, we may arrange for it to be taken away and disposed of.
