Garden waste recycling bin
The garden waste recycling service is an optional, chargeable wheeled bin service. Subscribers to this service receive a green bin with a green lid. Payment for the garden waste service is made annually by Direct Debit.
The garden waste collection service isn't available to residents on our rural or narrow access round.
Collections are made fortnightly, except for a two week break over Christmas and New Year. Your garden waste bin must be out ready for collection by 6.30am on your collection day. This may not be the same day as your other waste collections.
If you think we have missed your bin collection, you can report it to us online.
Garden waste should not be put in your general waste bin. If garden waste is found in your general waste, it will not be collected.

Frequently asked questions
We provide a 240 litre green bin which has a green lid. The dimensions of the bin are approximately 110 centimetres high, 58cm wide and 74cm deep.
Do not mark the bin with paint or similar, you do not own the bin. If you would like an address label for your bin, contact us on 01293 438772.
Place your bin for emptying just inside the edge of your property boundary, at the nearest point to the public highway.
Make sure your garden waste bin is clearly visible from the road and not blocking footpaths.
After collection, ensure your bin is stored within the boundary of your property.
All garden waste must fit into the wheeled bin provided with the lid fully shut. We do not take any additional garden waste left at the side of your bin.
You can apply for a second garden bin if you regularly have too much garden waste. There will be an additional charge for this.
Any excess garden waste can be taken to the Crawley recycling centre.
Yes but the bin must be registered with only one resident for payment purposes and will be emptied from their address.
If your garden waste bin:
- was placed at the edge of your property in the correct position and by 6:30am
- had the correct contents in it
- was not too heavy or had too much in it
- was not collected on the advertised day
We replace garden waste bins that go missing or are accidentally damaged by the collection crew or through general wear and tear.
If damage is done deliberately or on more than one occasion during the year, you will be charged £25 for a replacement.
To order a replacement bin, change your bin.
Before you change your address or if you want to stop the garden waste service, complete our garden waste account changes form so we can update your account. If you are moving within Crawley, take the garden waste bin with you.
No refunds are given if you decide to cancel the service part way through the year.
The Controlled Waste Regulations 1992 allow a charge to be made for the collection of garden waste. This means that residents who do not have a garden, who home compost, or do not wish to use this service, do not pay for the running of the service through their Council Tax.
Home composting is still the most environmentally friendly option. You can buy a subsidised compost bin from Get Composting. Visit West Sussex County Council for more information about composting.
The collected garden waste is taken to Olus near Henfield, where it is turned into compost.
Residents can buy the compost, called Revive soil conditioner, from Crawley Recycling Centre.
An assisted bin collections service is available if you are unable to move your bins to the edge of your property.
