Change your bin

You can request any changes to your bin online if:

  • you would like an additional recycling or food waste bin
  • your bin is either damaged or missing
  • you need a general waste bin bigger than the standard size of 140 litres
  • you need an unwanted bin removed

To reduce waste, we reuse bins. The bin you receive may not be brand new but it will be clean.

Larger general waste bin policy

If you are applying for a large general waste bin due to the new recycling and waste collection service, please note we will only consider applications which meet our collection policy and criteria. We are asking residents to give the new service a go with recycling as much as possible, using the new food waste containers and trying to reduce waste further. The majority of councils now operate similar recycling and waste collection services with the same, if not less frequent general rubbish collections in place.

The standard size of the general waste bin we provide is 140 litres. No additional general waste on or beside the bin is accepted, and bin lids must be shut for collection. This size of bin should meet the needs of most households as long as recycling services are being fully utilised.

We are committed to supporting residents in managing their waste while promoting recycling and reducing overall waste production. Larger general waste bins, which are 240 litres in size, will only be provided under specific circumstances, and these provisions are temporary and subject to regular review.

Before applying for a larger general waste bin, please make sure you are:

  • reducing your waste as much as possible
  • making full use of the recycling collection services available, including food waste. We can provide a larger or second recycling bin and food waste bin if needed
  • making full use of the facilities at the Crawley recycling centre
  • taking soft plastics such as crisp packets, bread bags, frozen food bags and toilet roll wrapping to major supermarkets to be recycled, where able to
  • using Anglo Recycling's free doorstep collections or charity shops for unwanted reusable clothing, books, toys, CDs, DVDs, kitchenware and more. Find out more about Anglo Recycling's free collection service

Please be aware that when considering your request for a larger bin, we only take into account general waste generated by permanent residents living at the property and do not count waste from pets.

You may be required to provide evidence to support your application for a larger general waste bin. Any false or incorrect information provided will result in the cancellation of your request and removal of authorisation for a larger bin.

Request a bin change

If your bin has been neglected, misused or deliberately broken you will be charged £25 for a replacement. Bins remain the property of the council.

Moving house

If you are moving house, leave the bins at the property for the new occupiers, unless:

  • you have a larger 240 litre general waste bin and are moving within Crawley. Take the bin with you and email us at waste&recycling@crawley.gov.uk so we can arrange bins at the two properties. If you are moving outside of Crawley, let us know
  • you have a garden waste recycling bin and are moving within Crawley. Take the bin with you and complete our garden waste account changes form so we can update your account. If you are moving outside of Crawley or don’t require the service anymore, let us know.

We do not replace existing bins if you have moved into a property and want new bins.

Communal bins

If you live in a property with communal bins, email us at waste&recycling@crawley.gov.uk for more information.
