Demolition notices and dangerous structures
Section 80 of the Building Act 1984 requires anyone intending to demolish a building (or part of a building) to give advance notification to the local authority in which the building stands. Exceptions are where the building is less than 1750 cubic feet, or if the demolition only involves internal parts of a building, or certain agricultural buildings.
If you plan to demolish a building, or a part of a building, then you must provide us with a demolition notice. We need at least 6 weeks notice. When we receive a demolition notice, we send a list of requirements detailing how the demolition should be carried out.
Download our demolition notice form below, complete and return it to building.control@crawley.gov.uk. If you need advice, call us on 01293 438188.
It is a legal offence to commence demolition before the council has formally responded, unless six weeks has elapsed since sending the notification of intended demolition.
Do I need planning permission?
You may also need planning permission for your proposed work, especially if the building is listed or within a conservation area.
Dangerous structures
We have a reporting system to deal with dangerous structures. Our building control surveyors will investigate the report and if necessary, work with the building owner to make it safe.
If you think a building or structure may be dangerous, please email us at building.control@crawley.gov.uk or call on 01293 438188.
