Reducing your emissions

As part of our Climate and Nature Emergency Declaration, we pledge to work with local community and business groups to reduce borough-wide emissions to net zero by 2045.

Greenhouse emissions are emitted into the atmosphere through the way we heat and power our homes, the transport we use and the goods and services we buy. The total of these emissions is known as our “Carbon Footprint”.

In many cases, taking steps to reduce your emissions will also save you money.

A good place to start is by calculating your carbon footprint and discovering ways to reduce it, which takes just 5 minutes.

How you travel

Things you buy and use

Avoid single-use items and fast fashion, and try not to buy more than you need, shop around for second-hand or quality items that last a long time and repair and reuse and avoid waste. Visit West Sussex County Council's website to find out how to compost your food waste and visit our waste and recycling pages to recycle items you cannot reuse.

Your green spaces

If you have a garden, you can plant trees and shrubs and encourage wildlife by allowing a corner to go wild. Get involved by joining a community garden group
