Reducing our emissions
As part of our climate and emergency declaration we commit to reduce our direct emissions to next zero by 2030, and work with local community and business groups to reduce borough wide emissions to net zero by 2045.
Greenhouse emissions are emitted into the atmosphere through the way we heat and power our homes and buildings, the transport we use and the goods and services we buy.
Action to Zero is our strategy for reducing our impact on the environment and helping Crawley to become a greener, cleaner and nicer place to live.
Action we have taken so far to reduce emissions
- we are part of the West Sussex Affordable Energy partnership, supporting households with practical advice on reducing energy, keeping warm and accessing grant funding. Find out more about home energy on the West Sussex Energy website.
- crawley Borough Council has established a Town Centre Heat Network to provide heat to the new town hall and local homes. This is due to be expanded in 2025
- crawley Homes has secured grants from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund to improve insulation and reduce energy bills for tenants
- we have secured funds from the Low Carbon Skills Fund to investigate how energy efficiency can be improved across its buildings and community centres and from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to carry out the works
- we are working in partnership with WSCC and other local authorities to advise residents on buying on rooftop solar panels and battery storage. A new scheme is due to be launched in 2025
- published our transport strategy, New Directions, which describes our vision for a low-carbon, healthy and attractive town. Visit our transport and access plans page to read New Directions transport strategy
- we are working with WSCC to make it easier to travel on foot, or by cycling or scooting, which have health benefits as well as being good for the environment. This includes new paths for bikes and walking, improved access for people with disability and an ‘Active Travel to Schools’ programme.
- we are working with WSCC and Connected Kerb to provide EV charging facilities across Crawley to help reduce the number of petrol and diesel vehicles on our roads. Visit Connected Kerb's website for more information
