Reducing our emissions

As part of our climate and emergency declaration we commit to reduce our direct emissions to net zero by 2030, and work with local community and business groups to reduce borough wide emissions to net zero by 2045.

Greenhouse emissions are emitted into the atmosphere through the way we heat and power our homes and buildings, the transport we use and the goods and services we buy.

Action to Zero is our strategy for reducing our impact on the environment and helping Crawley to become a greener, cleaner and nicer place to live.

Action we have taken so far to reduce the cost of energy and reduce emissions

  • we are part of the West Sussex Affordable Energy Partnership, supporting residents with advice on keeping homes warm, saving energy, and applying for grants. Through government funding, we have helped low income households improve insulation, install solar panels, and use cleaner heating. Find out more about home energy on the West Sussex Energy website
  • Crawley Homes is investing in better heating and insulation for council homes. With help from government grants, over 1,000 homes have been upgraded so far, making them warmer and more energy efficient
  • we run a town centre heat network that provides heat to the Town Hall and nearby homes. We plan to expand and decarbonise this network and explore new heat networks in Manor Royal and Gatwick Airport, with a long-term vision for a borough-wide low carbon heat network
  • we have improved heating controls in community buildings so energy is not wasted
  • we are working with West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and other local authorities to help residents and businesses install rooftop solar panels
  • we support Re-Energise Manor Royal, a project that helps businesses install solar panels on their roofs. Read more about the Re-Energise Manor Royal project
  • we have published a transport plan called New Directions, which describes our vision for a low-carbon, healthy and attractive town. Visit our transport and access plans page to read the New Directions transport strategy
  • we work with WSCC to make it easier and safer to walk, cycle or scoot. This includes healthier and safer travel to school and better access for people with disabilities. We also look for funding to improve walking and cycling routes and work with local groups to encourage active travel
  • we are improving bus shelters and improving public transport interchanges at our railway stations in the town centre and Three Bridges
  • we are working with WSCC and Connected Kerb to provide electric car charging points across Crawley. Through the West Sussex Chargepoint network, over 130 public sockets have been installed so far. Visit Connected Kerb's website for more information
  • we are working with Parity Projects to offer a Plan Builder tool that helps homeowners look at ways to improve their home’s energy use, including estimated costs and savings. Find out more about the Energy Saving Plan Builder
  • using grant funding from Sports England and council funds, a new 350kW solar carport at K2 Leisure Centre now produces clean, lower cost electricity
  • we work with our suppliers to understand how they are cutting emissions linked to council contracts. We now have an updated Sustainable Procurement and Social Value Charter that asks suppliers to measure and reduce their emissions, with extra flexibility for small businesses
  • we encourage council staff to use public transport and active travel
  • we have helped some of our commercial tenants create plans to use cleaner energy and heating. These plans have helped them get grants to improve insulation, upgrade heating, and install solar panels. We will keep looking for ways to help commercial tenants reduce their energy costs
