Tennis

From 9 January 2023, nine courts – four in West Green Park, three in Maidenbower Park and two in Southgate Park – will be refurbished and upgraded over the next few months. Improvements include court surfaces, nets, posts, fencing and on online booking system linked to access-controlled gates to ensure all residents can guarantee their court booking slot.

A comprehensive weekly schedule of programmed activity will also be added which will include coaching and competition for all ages and abilities as well as weekly free opportunities too.

Temporary play lines will be used where courts are being resurfaced. The courts in Maidenbower will be pressure cleaned. All nine courts will be colour sprayed in spring, when the weather improves.

Two of the three facilities will remain open for use at all times. All dates are subject to weather conditions.

As soon as the renovations are complete, the online court booking system will go live at crawley.gov.uk/tennis; it’s easy to use and money generated from bookings will pay for court improvements in the future.

An annual season ticket covering all courts will cost Crawley residents £45 per annum per household or £7.50 per hour on a pay per play basis. An additional fee will be payable for the use of floodlights at West Green Park.

In addition, the courts will play host to organised, paid-for coaching sessions as well as free tennis coaching sessions in Maidenbower and West Green. These free sessions restart in Maidenbower in March.

Questions and answers

What courts will be affected?

Works are being carried out on nine Crawley Borough Council courts at Maidenbower Park, Southgate Park and West Green Park. The court at Worth Park is not part of this investment plan. Worth Park would require a full rebuild as recommended by an independent audit and further work on the options for this single court facility will need to be undertaken.

Why are the courts being upgraded?

All venues require some level of upgrade as identified by two separate audits completed in 2019, and again in 2020, by the facilities teams of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and a leading national tennis operator. The LTA identified Crawley as a priority area for tennis development in the south east due to its demographic, latent demand and potential to expand and improve existing facilities.

What works are being carried out?

Works include resurfacing, repainting, new nets and posts (where required), new fencing and access-controlled gates, and accessibility improvements.

When will the works begin and for how long?

The works started on 9 January and are estimated to last for 10 to 12 weeks (subject to weather conditions). Works are planned to be carried out in succession to avoid disruption where possible to residents.

How are the works being funded?

Working closely with the LTA we were successful in securing a significant grant from the LTA and central government. Councillors agreed to spend £271,850 at Maidenbower, Southgate and West Green parks to improve the facilities and to increase participation.

How can I book a tennis court?

As soon as the renovations are complete, the online court booking system will go live on this page; it’s easy to use and money generated from bookings will pay for court improvements in the future. If you do not already have a ClubSpark account, you will be required to create one.

Will there be any free court availability?

A selection of free sessions will be available every week at both Maidenbower and West Green Park. In addition, we will be running community and coaching provision across the year at all three venues.

How much is a residents’ season ticket?

Crawley residents will benefit from a discounted household membership of £45 per year, which is equivalent to just 87p per week. Alternatively, there will be a pay per play and this will cost about £7.50 per hour (an additional fee will be payable for the use of floodlights at West Green Park).

Is there coaching available?

When the renovations are completed, coaching will be offered through our new tennis coaching provider. They will offer programmes for people of all ages and abilities. Details will be available on this page in the near future.
