Memorials and ashes
Many people have fond memories of visits to Tilgate Park and Goffs Park and we understand the comfort it can bring to remember loved ones in such peaceful and beautiful settings. We are pleased to offer a range of memorial options to help you celebrate and cherish the memory of family and friends.
Memorial benches
We offer a small number of memorial benches in Tilgate and Goffs parks to commemorate a loved one. The parks provide a peaceful and picturesque setting where family and friends can come together to enjoy the beautiful outdoors to reflect and remember. The memorial benches are placed in carefully selected locations within the parks to complement the natural landscape while offering a place of comfort and remembrance.
The benches are made from durable recycled materials, placed on a concrete base and fitted with a personal engraved plaque with an inscription of up to 50 characters.
Benches are donated for the enjoyment of all park visitors. To maintain their dignity and appearance, we ask that no flowers or personal items be attached or placed near to the bench.
Memorial benches are available at Goffs Park. No new memorial benches are currently being installed at Tilgate Park. The next review will take place in summer 2026.
Ashes scattering
Our dedicated ashes scattering area is in the tranquil Remembrance Garden at Tilgate Park, a serene natural woodland designed for quiet reflection. To preserve the beauty and respect of this space, ashes may only be scattered in the Remembrance Garden and with prior permission.
You need to book a morning or afternoon session to scatter ashes and the service is available year-round, any day of the week, with at least one week’s notice. Once you have chosen your date you can arrange your ashes scattering where you can meet family and friends in the garden and have time for private reflection.
For those wishing to hold a celebration of life, The Barn at Tilgate Park is available to hire separately and can be complemented with local catering. Enquiries for The Barn can be sent to tilgatebarn@crawley.gov.uk.
Memorial plaques
Memorial plaques are placed on wooden posts surrounding the Remembrance Garden in Tilgate Park, offering a personal tribute in a peaceful setting.
Plaques are an engraved stainless-steel leaf with an inscription of up to 60 characters. Once engraved, plaques are installed by our Parks team, and you will be notified when it is in place. Family and friends may then visit whenever they like. We kindly ask that no items be attached to plaques or posts, and that no personal items or mementoes are placed within the Remembrance Garden.
Memorial trees
We offer a limited number of memorial trees for planting at Tilgate Park to remember a loved one. You can choose from a memorial tree only or a memorial tree with an engraved plaque and five years of aftercare.
Trees are carefully selected to suit the park’s environment and our team will monitor and care for the tree to help it establish. In the event of environmental or accidental damage, we will provide one replacement tree. We respectfully ask that no personal items be placed on or around memorial trees.
Each winter, we review our tree stock at Tilgate Park and determine whether we are able to offer a limited number of memorial trees for planting. The warm weather in 2025 resulted in very dry ground conditions and so the park team are prioritising the care of recently planted trees. The next review will take place in summer 2026.
