Crawley Homes recently held its second tenants conference, designed to give residents the opportunity to share their views, ask questions and help shape future housing services.
The event, which was organised together with the Tenant and Leaseholder Action Panel, included a mix of informative sessions, engaging workshops and the chance to meet staff and other tenants. The opening session covered the outcome of Crawley Homes’ Regulatory Social Housing inspection, providing an update of what has happened since, including the strengthening of tenant involvement in the governance and oversight of Crawley Homes. It also guided attendees through the service standards Crawley Homes will be bringing in.
The workshops gave tenants the opportunity to discuss and discover more information about community spaces and neighbourhood management, repairs and maintenance, and, decarbonisation and energy efficiency.
Following the workshops, tenants were able to take part in themed discussion tables, covering topics such as tenants’ rights and responsibilities, housing allocations, downsizing and mutual exchange, decent homes and building safety, communication and customer care, resident involvement, accessibility and equalities.
During the lunch break, tenants had access to a range of information stalls, giving them the chance to speak directly with council teams and partner organisations. Stalls covered areas including Right to Buy, sheltered housing and Lifeline services. Local community organisations and LEAP were also in attendance.
Councillor Ian Irvine, Cabinet member for Housing at Crawley Borough Council, joined Crawley Homes’ senior staff for the question and answer panel, which answered a wide range of questions from the floor, with lunch providing an opportunity for informal discussions. Colleagues from council contractors Mears Group, WPS and Liberty were also part of this successful day.
Learnings from the Grenfell tragedy highlighted the importance of councils really listening to tenants and the issues that they raise. This event is about listening to our tenants and working together to improve housing services in Crawley. By bringing residents, officers and senior managers into the same space, we can have open and constructive conversations about what matters most to people in their homes and neighbourhoods.
Tenant feedback is essential in shaping our priorities. This day gave residents a real opportunity to influence decisions, ask questions and learn more about the support and services available to them. We look forward to welcoming even more tenants to next year's conference.
Councillor Irvine
Cabinet Member for Housing
Crawley Borough Council
