From: Waste and recycling

There is just one week to go until Crawley Borough Council launches its new weekly food waste collection service for individual households across the borough as part of the government’s Simpler Recycling reforms first introduced in 2021. The new service starts on Monday 28 September, with food waste collected every week on residents’ normal bin collection day.

New food waste bins and caddies have been delivered to individual households across Crawley ahead of the launch. Each starter pack includes a lockable 23-litre outdoor food waste bin with an orange lid, a five-litre indoor caddy, a free starter roll of compostable liners and a leaflet containing a collection calendar.

More than 44 per cent* of the average general waste bin in Crawley is food waste, so the new service will provide residents with an easy way to recycle more of their household waste. Once collected, food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion plant, where it is transformed into renewable energy and fertiliser for local farms.

Alongside the introduction of weekly food waste collections, general waste collections for individual households will move to a fortnightly schedule using existing bins. Other collections will remain unchanged. The fortnightly kerbside dry, mixed recycling service will continue as normal, as will the garden waste collection service, which remains available by subscription.

Flats and other properties with communal bins will remain on their current collection arrangements and are expected to join the new service at a later date.

With just one week to go, we’re encouraging residents to get ready for the start of our new weekly food waste collections. Food waste makes up a significant proportion of what currently goes into general waste bins in Crawley, so this new service is an important step in helping us recycle more.

Residents can start using the new food waste bin and caddy ahead of collections starting from next Monday 28 September. Any damaged or missing bins or caddies can be reported on the dedicated food waste page on the Crawley Borough Council website, which also features useful information and common frequently asked questions about the service.
