A vibrant new mosaic has been unveiled at Broadfield Barton shopping parade, marking a fresh chapter for a much-loved community artwork.
The Mayor of Crawley was joined by fellow councillors, residents and local stakeholders on Wednesday 27 May to officially reveal the new installation, created by artist Sue Penrose.
The original ‘Making a Mark’ mosaic has been a familiar feature of the parade for over 20 years. However, after two decades of exposure to the elements, it had begun to show signs of wear and required replacement. The newly commissioned mosaic both refreshes the space and celebrates the legacy of the original piece.
Designed with strong community themes, the new artwork incorporates elements inspired by the original design. Hand motifs symbolise the people of Broadfield and their shared identity, while circular forms represent trees, reflecting growth and the importance of the local environment.
I am delighted that artist Sue Penrose has created this new mosaic, which has been carefully designed to reflect the spirit of Broadfield. Crawley has a strong tradition of commissioning public art, and pieces like this play an important role in shaping the identity of our neighbourhoods. They help to tell local stories, celebrate our communities, and create spaces that people feel proud of. I hope that this new mosaic will, in time, become just as familiar and well-loved as the one it replaces, and that it will continue to bring colour and character to Broadfield Barton for many years to come.
