Residents are being encouraged to discover the many benefits of allotment gardening as Crawley Borough Council highlights the positive impact allotments have on wellbeing, community and the environment.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables is becoming increasingly popular, with allotments offering far more than just fresh produce. Spending time outdoors, being physically active and connecting with nature can all have a positive impact on mental and physical wellbeing. Allotments also provide opportunities for people to meet others with shared interests, helping to reduce loneliness and build stronger communities.

The council manages allotment sites across the borough and is keen to encourage more residents to get involved in growing their own food. Home-grown fruit and vegetables can help households save money, while also reducing food miles and packaging waste.

To mark national Allotments Week recently, Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Crawley Borough Council and the Cabinet member for Leisure and Wellbeing, Councillor Chris Mullins made a visit to Tilgate allotments.

Allotments play an important role in supporting residents' wellbeing. They provide a chance to spend time outdoors, stay active and connect with nature.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or trying it for the first time, allotments can be a fantastic way to improve both your physical and mental health. They also help people grow affordable, healthy food.

We were really impressed to see the visible effort many people have gone to with their own spaces and the real sense of community spirit and camaraderie, as the allotment holders were having their own exhibition of what they have grown this season.

As a council, we are thoroughly proud of the allotment sites we provide across the borough and encourage anyone with an interest in gardening to find out more.

Councillor Michael Jones

Leader of Crawley Borough Council

As demand for allotments continues to grow, there is currently limited availability of smaller plots at Cherry Lane in Langley Green, which are ideal for beginners or those looking to try allotment gardening for the first time. Residents can also join waiting lists for other sites across the borough.
