About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Democracy and Data Team and to make a real difference to the town, its people and its local businesses. 75 years on from its establishment as a new town, Crawley is now a regional powerhouse with more than 114,000 residents, a £6bn economy and Gatwick Airport, the world’s busiest single runway airport.

You will ensure that the council fulfils its duties around the disclosure and protection of data and information. The team has a good track record of providing swift and accurate responses to freedom of information requests and subject access requests. You will be instrumental to the open and transparent operation of this important statutory function.

We provide high quality technical advice and administrative support to colleagues in service teams across the organisation.  We also maintain positive and collaborative relations with our elected councillors, the Press and with other stakeholders and agencies.

We are always looking to improve our service and work in a more professional and efficient way. We are close to going live with a new data request management system which in combination redaction and bundling capabilities will ensure a digital and paperless approach.

You will be able to demonstrate experience and transferrable analytical skills which will help you develop knowledge and expertise in the information governance field. You should be committed to continuous professional development and be willing to undertake a data protection qualification. You will champion a robust information governance culture and contribute towards various data projects and the development of relevant training programme.

The small but efficient team fosters a friendly, collegiate and supportive physical and remote working environment. With a mix of homeworking and office-based working, we offer flexibility to the team and to our new recruits. In the next few months, the team’s physical presence will be within grade A offices at the New Town Hall which forms part of a wider £150m redevelopment scheme.

We welcome applications from full-time or part-time candidates and aim to support those with family commitments or caring responsibilities.

We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible, as we may close this advert before the stated closing date if enough applications are received.

Additional information

Due to the requirement to assist with elections where necessary, this is a politically restricted post for the purposes of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989. Employee benefits

We offer a generous employee benefits package, with a range of discounts, benefits and wellbeing incentives to suit everyone.

Our way of working

Our shared values and behaviours reflect the special nature of our council. We encourage all colleagues to put them into practice, whatever job they do. Take a look to see if we are the perfect match.

Safer recruitment

Crawley Borough Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We want to be an inclusive and diverse employer of first choice reflecting the community we serve and particularly welcome applications from all under represented groups.
