West Sussex has nearly 5,000 governors serving on 308 governing bodies in primary, secondary and special schools.
Every school has its own governing body which plays an important part in overseeing the running of the school. No formal qualifications are needed - just an interest in, and commitment to, children and their education.
School governance is a team effort, and decisions are made together, so that no individual governor acts on his or her own. The best governing bodies are made up of men and women who understand that ordinary people who care about education can, and really do, make a difference to their schools.
