Housing Allocations Policy

There are around 10,500 social rented properties in Crawley but on average only around 350 become available each year. With over 2000 people in the housing register not everyone can be considered for council housing as demand far outstrips supply.

We must ensure a balanced approach when allocating housing so that priority is given to people with the highest level of need and that we make better use of the available properties.

Local Connection and Residency

Since December 2014 only those who have a strong connection to the Borough are able to access social housing in Crawley. Applicants need to have lived here continuously for 5 years in order to qualify to be on the Housing Register.

Applicants also qualify if:

Applicants who do not satisfy any of the above criteria will generally not qualify unless there are exceptional circumstances.

When an offer of accommodation is made applicants will be required to provide evidence of their 5 year local connection to Crawley. If they are unable to provide sufficient evidence, the offer will not proceed and they will be taken off the housing register.
