Paying Your Rent

Remember: Your rent must be paid weekly or in advance and any payments for rent arrears are in addition to your rent payments.

53 weeks’ rent

2019/2020, this financial year has 53 Mondays and as Monday is the day your rent is due, you will need to pay 53 weeks’ rent next year. Read our information sheet to find out more.

Calculating your rent

Most council housing rents are social rents and are worked out on a formula set by Government. This formula is based on the value of the property, local income levels and the size of the property.

Our Tenancy Policy adopted in 2013, introduced Affordable rents which can be set at up to 80% of market rent.

For the last four years social rents have been subject to a one per cent reduction each year. The decrease in rent applied to social rents only, it didn’t apply to shared ownership, hostel or garage rents and it didn’t apply to service charges such as those for communal cleaning.

In February 2019 the Government issued a Policy Statement on rents for social housing, which replaces the Guidance on Rents for Social Housing issued in May 2014. This contains the details of how rents will be calculated for the next financial year.

Rent Statements

To help you manage your rent account, Rent Statements are sent out every three months. The statement shows all transactions made on the rent account since the last statement was produced.

If you would like a rent statement sent to you at any time, please email us.
