Money and Debt Advice

We all struggle financially from time to time, so this section contains advice and information that may help.

Take control of your money

Good money management can mean many things – from living within your means or saving for short and long-term goals, to having a realistic plan to pay off your debts. Visit the Money Advice Service to learn how to set up a budget, make the most of your money, pay off debts or start saving.

It’s a good idea to set a bit of money aside as you don’t know what’s around the corner, your washing machine might break, you might need to fix the car or you could even be out of work for a while.

Start a savings account with a bank, building society or post office or see what Boom, your local Credit Union offers.

Dealing with debt

Most of us need to borrow money at some point in our lives and as long as we pay the money back when we should, this isn’t a problem. However if we can’t or won’t pay the money back, debt can quickly become unmanageable.

Don’t ignore the situation, ask for help before debt gets out of hand. There are many organisations who can give you free help and advice about debts, such as:

Looking for a Loan?

Banks and building societies are the first stop for many people but not everyone can get a loan from them and they may not be the cheapest.

Department of Work and Pensions (Jobcentre) offer interest free budgeting loans for people on means-tested benefits to help pay for essential things. If you are on Universal Credit you can apply for a Budgeting Advance .

Boom – A not-for-profit organisation that provides savings accounts and loans for the people of West Sussex and will consider lending to people on benefits and those with poor credit ratings.

Be aware - Payday Loans can seem like a good way out of short term money problems, but often lead to long term debt. The Money Advice Service have information and advice about payday loans on their website.

Changes to Benefits

There have been a number of changes to the benefits system, with more to come as Universal Credit is introduced.
