Paying Your Rent

Remember: Your rent must be paid weekly or in advance and any payments for rent arrears are in addition to your rent payments.

Calculating your rent

Since 2001, most council housing rents have been decided by a formula set by Government. This formula was based on the value of the property, local income levels, the size of the property and the Retail Price Index. See the Guidance on Rents for Social Housing .

In the budget on 8 July 2015 the Government announced that social rents would be subject to a one per cent reduction for four years, starting in April 2016. This reduction will be based on the rent worked out by the formula for 2015-16.

The reduction in rent has been set for four years, after this the rent formula will return to increases or decreases based on the Consumer Price Index plus one per cent.

The decrease in rent applies to social rents only, it doesn’t apply to shared ownership, hostel or garage rents. It doesn’t apply to service charges either, so if you live in a flat with communal cleaning or in sheltered housing a small part of your weekly payment will have gone up.

For 2017-18 there’s been a two per cent increase for shared ownership rents, services charges and garage rents.

Rent Statements

To help you manage your rent account, Rent Statements are sent out every three months. The statement shows all transactions made on the rent account since the last statement was produced.

How quickly does your payment reach your rent account?

Some payment methods mean your payment will reach your rent account on the same day and for others it could take up to four working days.
