Travellers in Crawley

The council is aware of and accepts the rights of Gypsies and Travellers to live a nomadic way of life and recognises Gypsies as a racial group.

Gypsies and Travellers are protected from discrimination by the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act 1998, together with all ethnic groups who have a particular culture, language or values.

We follow advice and guidance from the Government as well as fulfilling the council’s statutory duties concerning Gypsy and Traveller families.

West Sussex County Council currently provides 9 permanent sites for Travellers in West Sussex. There is a transit site in the county.

Dealing with illegal encampments

Crawley Borough Council works closely with Sussex Police in dealing with illegal traveller encampments. We take all the necessary legal steps to bring the encampments to an end while respecting the civil rights of the travellers themselves.
