Petitions Scheme

Crawley Borough Council has a Petitions Scheme which sets out how we will deal with petitions and explains the different options.

We welcome petitions which can help to inform debate and result in changes which can have a positive impact on local people, for example, by:

Who can submit and sign a petition?

Anyone who lives, works or studies in Crawley, including under 18s, can sign or organise and submit a petition to Crawley Borough Council which will be responded to.

The petition may be on anything for which the council has responsibility or which it is able to influence other than those matters specifically excluded under the scheme.

If your petition might be on a matter which is the responsibility of West Sussex County Council, please view their Petitions Scheme page.

How to start a petition

Online Petitions

We can accept petitions online, using our e-petitions tool.

Any e-petitions submitted need to meet the requirements of our petitions scheme before they are accepted and published for people to sign.

The e-petitions tool will enable you to create, sign and view the progress of petitions online. Using e-petitions can potentially make your petition and supporting information available to a much wider audience which may help you to get more people to support the petition.

Paper Petitions

Paper petitions should be submitted to:

Head of Legal and Democratic Services (Petitions Officer) at the address above.

What should a petition contain?

A sample petition sheet for signatures is available, which you are strongly encouraged to use.

A sample covering sheet for the principal petitioner to complete and submit is also attached.

What is the process for the organisation, submission and consideration of the petition?

The attached flowchart shows the process for submitting petitions and what happens once the petition has been submitted. Further details are contained in the petitions scheme . Advice about how to organise and submit your petition to the council can also be obtained from:
